Ms. Kerr completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto receiving her B.A. in 1982. In 1985 she graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School with an LL.B. She attended Cambridge University where she completed a Masters of Criminology in 1987. She took a one year sabbatical from her job as an Assistant Crown Attorney to attend Duke University where she graduated with a Masters of Law in 1991.
Ms. Kerr articled at the firm of Gilbert Wright and Flaherty. After her call to the Bar in 1988 she appeared as duty counsel at Old City Hall. Later in 1988 she was employed as an Assistant Crown Attorney in Toronto where she worked for five years. During this time she prosecuted individuals for a wide variety of Criminal Code offences including homicide, other serious crimes of violence, sexual assaults and fraud. In 1993 she established her own practice defending individuals accused of criminal and quasi criminal offences.
Ms. Kerr has extensive litigation experience. In law school she represented those accused of minor criminal offences. As an articling student she was responsible for all small claims court trials and civil motions in Superior Court. During her employment as an Assistant Crown Attorney she conducted numerous trials with and without a jury. Since 1993 she has represented individuals accused of a wide range of criminal activity. Her recent practice has focused on defending those charged with drug offences, crimes of violence including sexual assaults, and frauds. Ms. Kerr has frequently appeared as defence counsel on complex prosecutions involving serious criminal charges. She has argued cases at every level of trial and appeal court in Ontario.
